Engagement rate, explained

In Google Analytics 4, engagement rate is the share of sessions that were “engaged”: they lasted longer than 10 seconds, had a key event, or viewed at least two pages.

Why it matters

It replaced bounce rate as the main quality signal in GA4. A low engagement rate on an important page often means visitors didn’t find what they expected, or the page was slow on their phone.

How to improve it

  • Check the pages with the most visitors and the lowest engagement first.
  • Make sure the page answers the search that brought people there.
  • Test phone speed; see Core Web Vitals.
