Average position, explained

Average position is roughly where your website ranked in Google results for a search, averaged across all the times it appeared. Position 1 is the top result.

Why it matters

It shows which searches are close to page one. A search at position 8 to 15 is often the easiest to improve, because a small change can move it onto the first page where most clicks happen.

How to improve it

  • Find searches with many impressions and a position between 8 and 20.
  • Improve the page that ranks for them: answer the question fully and clearly.
  • Link to that page from other pages on your site.
